First Grade Field Trip

On Tuesday I was able to go with Maddy and the rest of the first graders to Schnepf Farms. We rode the bus the whole way to the farm and it took a lot longer than a 5 mile drive should. (aren't most field trips like this?) I guess that it does take more time to coordinate all of those kids!

We have been to the farm before, but we were able to have some new experiences this time; Maddy got to pick her own lettuce, which she thought was really cool. The guide asked the kids to shake the lettuce in case any ladybugs were on them, so that they would stay at the farm. I got a shot of one of them here:

Our guide was very specific about where the kids could step, and she would let them know if they were standing on something that they weren't supposed to! (I thought she was a tad scary for 6 and 7 year olds....and 32 year olds!)

Here is a picture of Maddy and her friend Kiara on the playground. This is where we spent most of our time!

The coolest thing at the farm were the piglets! They were only 4 days old and I could've watched them all day! When they would run around, their little legs looked cartoon-ish. Very sweet!

Here is another picture of the babies:
Another favorite was the peacock. It had its tail fanned out almost the entire time we were there. All the kids thought it was pretty cool.

Here are some more random pictures of our day.

This picture was taken on our hay ride through the farm. We rode through the peach and apricot orchards, past the reindeer (yes reindeer in Arizona!) and over to the gardens. The kids sat on hay bales on the back of a long trailer. I don't know if it was my cold or allergies, but I think I sneezed the entire time!
This is Maddy's teacher (Mrs. Romney) showing all of the kids the reindeer. Maddy sure loves having her for a teacher! She has really helped Maddy's reading improve as well. Maddy is now reading 'chapter books' on her own, which just blows me away!
This was my group that I was responsible for. Aren't first graders so cute? I love that they still will hold hands without cringing, and that they will say whatever is on their mind! Such a great age! It was a fun day and I was worn out by the time I got home! Those kids have even more energy than me!

I love being able to volunteer for things like this. It's also so fun to see Maddy interact with her school friends. She is really outgrowing her shyness which is a relief to me. I guess as parents we just want our kids to be confident and happy and have good influences in their lives. This day made me very hopeful that she does have all those things.

Thanks for sharing our adventure with us!
